Featured New Additions
Two new (6/16/2009) stories Fred Moore, both of which involve food! One is their lunch at a Truck Stop, and the other is the LFTAR Dinner they attended which featured very special entertainment.
Darwin Sator, author and self-confessed "Turcophile" has written not only his book advertised at right, but he has also kindly written some stories of his time 1956 - 1957 for MerhabaTurkey.com. He was the first person stationed at TUSLOG Det. 30, Ankara.
A new (4/1/2009) update from Fred Moore, and his wife Carol features history and wonderful photos of their day trip to Anavarza the ancient city northeast of today's Adana, in one of the most historic parts of the country. Check the photo of the tree that grew around a faucet! Now that's old!
We welcome a new contributor, Wayne Bohannon, has supplied a pictorially interesting take of "the old days" in Trabzon and a story to match. A little spare right now, but he plans to add more as time goes by - and memories occur.
Edward O'Brien married wife Jan while he was in the Air Force and when offered an early reenlistment - and a trip to Turkey - he accepted. Both had a wonderful time and Edward details some of the exploits of 1968 to 1970 in Ankara.
MerhabaTurkey contributor, Stan Hood, arrives with great memories of the "real Samsun" during his tour there 1960-1961. Great photos of the old base, as well. Were you in Samsun at the same time? Can you name the "unknowns" appearing in a couple of the photos?.
John Tudbury His father, a diplomat, served in Ankara through John's childhood. As an adult, John served a sterling military career in Turkey. Out of the military, he becomes a decorated police officer in Boise, Idaho from which after years of service, he resigns and then volunteers as a police science instructor in Iraq. And we just received yet another update - John at age 54 playing in the Tired Body World Series in Iraq - with photos! Click Here!
Alfred Cammarata joins our group of contributors with his duty at Incirlik and Iskenderun, among other places. His description of duty is like being there!
Lew Culkin fires off a multi-faceted report on his 1958-1959 tour at "Trab." It is a nicely illustrated tale of his life in a small military unit coupled with the complications of having to travel back to the U.S. for emergency leave, and the build-up of the Trabzon base overlooking the Black Sea.
We present John S. Wilkinson's well researched information on the closure of Diyarbakır air base in 1997, and the story of this important military center.
A tiny group of American soldiers among a battalion of Turkish troops provides the story for Kevin O'Neill's story of duty near Izmit at the east end of the Marmara Sea.
Sadly, those of us who served in TUSLOG in Turkey have lost more friends. Our Memorial Page has been updated. Protect your good memories of these fine people.
Jim Partica shares a secret in his first-person tale of living in eastern Anatolia at Erzurum. The secret is contained in the second sentence of his last paragraph. Erzurum has been geographically important for thousands of years, lying at the crossroads of main trade routes in Asia Minor. Living there, Jim made the most of his time.
Wayne Tiller posted his personal memoirs of life in Samsun, Turkey on his own website. We asked - and received - permission to reprint it here as we are always looking for a good story. So click to see it! Let Wayne know if any of your own memories are triggered!
Rick Moore sends us a new update in his tour in Erzurum, giving a fascinating look at duty in one of the smaller U.S. bases in Turkey during the cold war.

Here's a New 7-15-2008 photo of the Karamursel base. We also have a 4/9/2008 (older) aerial version here, and the original look of the site five years ago seen here. (the photos are not identical due to the fact they're taking from flyovers and therefore the trajectories are not exact.) Open both in separate web browsers and see all the new construction that has gone on. See any sights you remember "from the old days?" Caution: large photos. TARGABURUN (KARGABURUN)
|
Jack Eckert Stories about U.S. Coastguard life on the north coast of the Marmara Sea west of Istanbul at this Loran station. There's controversy over the T or the K spelling. In Turkish, Kargaburun means "pliers". Jack says it's "T". Coast Guard spells it with a "K". Go figure. |
